Behind the Scenes at MAGIC Market Week

I have finally fully recovered from my almost week long trip from Vegas last week. What an experience! There were definitely many firsts that made it great, but one of my most favorite parts was attending MAGIC Market Week. I had an amazing opportunity to help an online startup boutique plan and select merchandise for their upcoming launch. And let me tell you, all I wanted to do was buy, buy, buy…for myself! Ha! So of course, I shot several pics of my first experience at MAGIC.

Take a peek below…

My ‘after party’ attire: ODYLYNE dress, vintage clutch, Just Fab wedges and Urban Outfitters embellished belt.

Today, I’m heading on a plane back today from Vegas after SIX long days. Yes, you read that correctly. SIX days in Vegas. Don’t get it twisted, it was half work and half play. Coincidentally, my best friend’s birthday extravaganza lead immediately into the MAGIC convention.
After days of shopping, laughing, gambling, partying, walking the strip, checking out vendor booths, making purchases, networking, and the like, all I want to do is be comfortable as possible. What do I call comfort? A long maxi dress! I’m loving this look with wedges studded wedges and the pop of color with a cobalt blue satchel. Even though I’m currently not in wedges, I wish I wasn’t so terribly exhausted so I can strap on a pair. Sandals today it is!
Anyway, they’re calling for my group to board—cattle call style on Southwest. Happy Thursday!

Friday Feature: Stylist + Blogger, Raphael Sarmiento

I appreciate unique, personal style. Replication just can’t be done so easily when a person puts so much thought and effort into creating a specific tone and statement in mixing eras, putting together prints and hues and finalizing the finishing touches. When I met Raphael Sarmiento, aka Rap, that’s one of the first things I noticed about him– his awesome, unique style that is completely unpredictable and it works every damn time. Every week that I see him, I yell, “Yesssss!” Clearly, I just can’t get enough. As we got to know one another, it made perfect sense that he was a stylist. So you know what that meant– I had to pick his brain on his thoughts about fashion and style.
Check out an exclusive interview below:

Xiomara: What inspires your style?

Raphael: California. California style is laid back and simple. I think California has a kind of effortless glamour. I like to build looks around ‘California characters’ like Hollywood star, Dolores Park hipster, surfer dude, etc. I also feel an obligation to live up to my nickname, Rap Star, so I can get a little gaudy because you know… Rap is offensive.

Xiomara: Recent/most notable styling work you’ve done?
Raphael: A photo I styled got published in Vanity Fair! I was on set at another photo shoot I was styling back in May when I found out the news. It was a photo shoot I styled last summer and I had no idea that the photographer was going to submit it. Even though the photo in the magazine occupies a little corner, it was a crazy feeling to run my fingers over my work on a glossy page.
Xiomara: Describe your style?
Raphael: My style is eclectic, but well assembled. I like taking different genres of styles and mixing them together. I love to dress for occasion and play somewhat with themes but making sure that I don’t make it too literal so that it’s costume-y.
Xiomara: Favorite fashion/style icons?
Raphael: Pharrell, Andre 3000, Willy Cartier, Tony Montana aka Scarface, Cassie, Rihanna, Prince and Jean Michel Basquiat.
Xiomara: What inspired you to start styling and blogging?
Raphael: I’ve kept a personal blog since high school but it wasn’t until about a couple years ago that I decided to create a style blog. I started posting my OOTD’s on Instagram on International Suit Up Day 2011 and it’s grown since then. I began styling back in college when my friend asked me to put together outfits for her performances and since then have just taken on styling gigs when the opportunity comes. It feels a little arrogant to say this, but I’ve always had a way with clothes so it’s something that came natural.
Xiomara: What are some of your favorite go-to looks?
Raphael: I love stunting in some all black everything! But to break it up and keep it interesting, I add subtle details with pops of color, prints, and patterns. On lazy days nothing is better than a clean white tee, ripped up jeans, a snapback, and Timbs or Jordans.
Xiomara: Fave color? Fave print?
Raphael: Red is my favorite color. It’s always striking and with so many shades, it’s the easiest way to add a pop of color to any look. For prints, or patterns rather, I would have to go with snakeskin because it’s both luxe and edgy.

Monday Motivation: Motivation From Strangers

For those of us that ride public transportation, we’re used to hopping on and sticking to ourselves, immersed in our own worlds by playing Candy Crush on our phones, blaring Justin Timberlake’s new album via earbuds, reading Elle magazine, and the like. Rarely do we ever engage in conversation with the strangers we sit or stand next to.

Ever been inspired or touched by the actions of a stranger? If you did, did you get that feel-good, tingly, happy sensation that lit up your face? Well, I sure did when I read a post on The Bold Italic last week. Check out the video below of a BART (Bay Area Regional Transit) rider who greets the train every morning– it’s really touching! For the full read, check out the post here.

Happy Monday!

Friday Feature: Handsome Oxford

One of the things I love about my school, FIDM in San Francisco, is the number of guest speakers that come to visit and talk about their business in the fashion, textile, and retail industries. A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet Matt and his brother Mark of Handsome Oxford in San Francisco. Not only did I learn that we have mutual ties with previous Friday Feature, Dante Wright, but I was truly inspired by the passion that birthed the year-old store that offers American-made, vintage men’s clothing. Just seeing the enthusiasm, love and passion for his store is so amazing to witness. That’s a real entrepreneur right there! I even learned that most of the store’s merchandise started from the owner’s personal collection! Pretty awesome.
Keep scrolling for shots of the Handsome Oxford store, the team, and the merch. And most definitely check out the exclusive interview with Handsome Oxford owner, Matt.

Describe your personal style.
Frankly, I just wear a pair of Levi’s 501s, a plain tee and some beat sneakers most days. I’ve been keeping it really simple these past couple of years. I haven’t bought anything for myself!
How has style and fashion influenced your life?
I’ve always tried to read up on current fashion trends, designers, and etc. There are many brands I like; however, I never was too much of a consumer. I browse through blogs and magazines to see what I like and just store these images in my mind as inspirations. Now that I opened a shop, I recollect on these images and serve it as a platform on curating my store. Does that make sense?
All-time favorite brands?
The North Face.
Does your style translate into your merchandise in Handsome Oxford?
Yes. Everything I sell is something I’d personally wear. Everything I sell in the store is specifically handpicked by myself in hopes someone will love it as much as I do.
What inspired you to open Handsome Oxford?
I’ve always wanted to start my own business. I’ve always been inspired by entrepreneurship-turning your dreams into reality. You can see lots of broken dreams stored inside my mother’s garage, one endeavor to the next. I was saving money to either start a business or spend it all on traveling the world. But one random day, I was walking home and I stumbled upon an open commercial space. I applied for it, I got approved, I signed the lease, and boom!
American made and vintage men’s apparel is pretty unique. What’s the story?
Ever since High School I’ve been a huge pack rat. I collected all kinds of things new and vintage. I collected everything from street signs, restaurant menus, stickers, eyeglasses, shoes, clothes, etc. It wasn’t until I graduated that I realized most of these things I collected had a ton of value. In 2003, I remember selling 10 pairs of used Nikes on Ebay and made about $1400, then I took a trip to Hawaii.
It was about 3 years ago when I was digging through my collection that I noticed the majority of it was all American Vintage (Made in USA) clothing. I pitched the idea to my brother, Matt, about opening a vintage store, but our niche was strictly selling only American Made items. Thus, Handsome Oxford was born.
How has your first year in business been…any tips for aspiring entrepreneurs?
My first year has been truly unreal. It was an emotional rollercoaster (I never would have thought I’d become so emotional). There are even amounts of times where you find yourself at your highest and lowest points. However, you also achieve one of the greatest feelings ever…believing in and being proud of yourself!
I’ve met so many wonderful people from all parts of the world and have gained many of their friendships. From this, I learned to not only invest in yourself, but to invest in people. There are lots of beautiful people out there, and by having and knowing the right ones-this world immediately becomes your oyster.
It’s been a rough, yet rewarding year. There’s this anonymous quote I’ve been following:
“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.”
Any style icons or all-time inspirations?
Hiroshi Fugiwara, Spike Lee, Hiroki Nakamura, Shawn Stussy, Woody Allen, Junya Watanabe
American Workwear, American Outdoors, Ivy Leagues
What are your dreams for Handsome Oxford in the next 5 years?
2 locations:
San Francisco, CA USA

Nagoya, Japan 2014
